A Texas bank where peole matter most
How a volunteer's testimony grew Frost Bank's partnership with The Center.
In the spring of 2022, Karen Minyard stood up at the Boerne Open awards ceremony and spent about five minutes talking about Meals on Wheels.
A Center board member and longtime Meals on Wheels driver, Karen talked about the neighbors on her route. She talked about what it means to knock on a door and have someone be glad to see you. She talked about the small daily acts of care that the program is built on.
Kendal Volz was listening.
Kendal, Executive Vice President of Frost Wealth Management and one of the leads on the team’s $5,000 sponsorship that year, asked for a tour the following week. By 2023, Frost was the presenting sponsor of the tournament. By 2024, Kendal was on The Center’s board. And through his introduction to Frost’s trust department, The Center received $95,000 in grants last year alone.
This is the story of how a five-minute testimony from a volunteer grew a partnership that now helps sustain Meals on Wheels across Kendall County.
How it started
The first connection between The Center and Frost was practical. The Center moved its investment account to Frost while looking for a banking partner that would manage those funds with greater care. It was a business decision first.
Susie Allen, longtime board member, had deep banking ties across Boerne. Years earlier she had worked alongside Kevin Thompson, now Boerne’s local Frost banker, at another bank, where she had taken him on his first commercial calls. The professional respect and personal warmth between them carried over.
That’s where the relationship might have stayed. A solid business tie. Frost as a small-team sponsor of the 2021 Boerne Open.
Then Kevin had an idea. “We should bring Frost in for a tour.”
The inflection
By the spring of 2022, Frost had stepped up to a $5,000 team sponsorship. Kendal came to the tournament. He stayed for the awards ceremony. That’s when Karen spoke.
When Kendal came back the next week for a tour, he saw The Center’s dining room full at lunch. He met members and staff. He saw the medical equipment loan room. He understood what The Center is.
By 2023, Frost was the presenting sponsor of the Boerne Open. This year they raised that commitment by another $5,000.
From sponsor to partner
In 2024, Olivia Burdick and board chair Bill Bird invited Kendal to join The Center’s board. Kendal said yes.
What followed has reshaped what the Frost partnership looks like.
Kendal introduced Olivia to Melissa Adams in Frost’s trust department. The Center applied for two grant opportunities Melissa identified. Both were funded, totaling $95,000 last year. Kendal has remained an active board member and a personal donor since.
The Center's work in Boerne reflects exactly the kind of community impact Frost is proud to support. From the fellowship it fosters, to the vital nourishment Meals on Wheels brings to our seniors every day. At Frost, we believe in being a force for good wherever we do business. Being the title sponsor for The Boerne Open, benefiting The Center, is a small but meaningful way to stand alongside an organization doing truly great work for this community. Being part of The Center's board has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my time in Boerne.
Why this story matters
The Frost partnership shows how this work actually grows.
It didn’t start with a polished pitch. It started with a business relationship and a local banker who had the instinct to invite someone to come see what The Center does.
It deepened through a five-minute story told by a volunteer who knew her neighbors by name.
And it now sustains thousands of meals every year, because Kendal and the team at Frost stay close enough to see what their support makes possible.
That is what partnership looks like at The Center.
